Embedded Test Engineer

The Embedded Test Engineer is responsible for testing hardware/firmware for new and in-market embedded M2M/IOT devices. Products include wireless location tracking devices and Android based tablets. This is a full-time position.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Embedded Test Engineer plays a key role in supporting hardware and firmware development of new and in-market embedded M2M/IOT devices. The Embedded Test Engineer will work within a cross-functional team of local and international engineers under the direction of the Project Engineer. The Embedded Test Engineer is to become a hardware expert in all the products being built and supported by the Company. Products include wireless location tracking devices and Android based tablets. The ideal candidate must be comfortable analyzing complex circuit boards with minimal oversite, and understand the relationship between embedded firmware and hardware. The candidate must be able to function in a fast-paced small company environment, wear multiple hats and independently solve problems with minimal supervision. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review and analyze PCB layouts, schematics, and BOMs to validate prototype designs and revisions, and identify any potential design flaws
  • Provide recommendations for design changes/optimizations to Project Engineer and electrical engineers
  • Exercise circuit design knowledge to validate new PCBA prototypes, perform on board engineering change orders, and troubleshoot/refurbish RMA hardware returns while utilizing various electrical analysis equipment and machinery
  • Travel to remote field test sites and customer sites to execute test plans and troubleshoot deployed devices
  • Remotely interface with and support contract manufacturers to resolve QA problems that arise on the factory floor
  • Independently execute test plans and scripts to validate new device firmware/software releases
  • Perform regression testing on existing features and maintain resolution of previously solved bugs
  • Contribute to QA process by proposing and implementing new test procedures according to black/white/gray box testing methodologies
  • Analyze test logs/results to identify potential firmware bugs and perform root cause analysis of existing bugs and prepare written reports for firmware engineers to implement appropriate software fixes
  • Generate and provide status reports to management and identify and communicate bottlenecks and resource limitations inhibiting development process

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or related field of study
  • Experience may be considered in lieu of education requirement
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working with hardware or embedded devices
  • Strong soldering skills and experience with electrical monitoring equipment required (multimeters, waveform generators, oscilloscopes)
  • Experience utilizing PSPICE or ORCAD
  • Knowledge of GPS and wireless data (Cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth) technologies and protocols
  • Knowledge of JAVA, C or C++ programming in an embedded environment
  • Knowledge of serial communication protocols (I2C, SPI, UART, RS-232, USB)

These projects typically have a significant revenue scope and highly complex product needs. Requires a broad and deep understanding of technical concepts in conjunction with an understanding of the business to recommend strategy, advance technology and develop innovative solutions. Manages any interactions on the project to ensure highest levels of customer satisfaction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  •  Manage system design, development, and validation of M2M/IOT embedded devices and accessories
  •  Define project scope, product specifications, timelines, and resource requirements to complete projects according to customer specifications.
  • Drive and evaluate electrical and mechanical designs and upgrades and control build of materials.
  •  Direct contract manufacturers from prototype bring up through mass production and enforce proper manufacturing processes
  •  Create technical firmware and software specifications and workflows and utilize UML diagrams
  •  Use internal project management software to track, document, and assign out day to day tasks and overall phases and directives of the project
  •  Provide direction and support to a team of both on-site and off-site international engineers assigned to the project
  • Generate and provide status reports to management and identify and communicate bottlenecks and resource limitations inhibiting development process.
  • Create quality assurance and regression test plans, and support lab/field testing as needed

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  •   B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science or related field of study or experience
  •   5+ years of experience working with hardware or embedded devices. 1-2 years in a project lead role preferred.
  •   Knowledge of GPS and cellular data technologies and protocols and carrier certifications
  • Experience managing PCB design and/or manufacturing
  • Experience with JAVA, C or C++ programming in an embedded environment 
  • Knowledge of serial communication protocols (I2C, SPI, UART, RS-232, USB)
  •  Must have a thorough understanding of of development life cycles and test processes
  • Attention to detail and excellent time management skills are critical
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Office – Sits for minimum of 8 hours per day; Bend, reach, stoop and crouch; lift 10 lbs.
